Online Walk-Thru: Cute FTP

You're probably wondering what Cute FTP is. Cute FTP is a program which lets you access your web space on the internet. You can upload files to your web space to get a web page going.

Downloading & Installing Cute FTP

  • The first step is to click on the Cute FTP picture above which will let you download the program.
  • After clicking on it a screen might come up that says "What would you like to do with this file?", highlight "Save this program to disk" and click "OK".
  • The next window that appears should show your C: drive and its folders. If it does not say "(C:)" to the left of "Save in:", then click on the button with the arrow pointing down and find where it says "(C:)" and click on it. Now find this icon to the top right of the window: "" This is the "Create a new folder" icon, click on it.
  • After doing this a new folder should appear with highlighted text that says "New Folder", just type "CuteFTP" in its place.
  • After typing "CuteFTP" hit enter. Now double click on the folder you just created and everything in the window should disappear.
  • Now click on "Save".
  • It will show you the file transferring to your computer. After it is done you will probably see a window come up that says "Download Complete", click OK.
  • Now that you have Cute FTP downloaded it is time to get it installed and working properly.
  • The first thing you want to do is go to your desktop (the screen Windows boots up to) and double-click "My Computer".
  • Now double-click on the drive letter you put Cute FTP under (probably C:).
  • After doing this you should see a bunch of folders and files, look for the on that says "CuteFTP".
  • After you've found that folder, double-click on it.
  • Now you should see a single file called "cute2832.exe", double-click on it.
  • This will run the Cute FTP install program, just follow it's directions. (When it prompts you for the directory i would put in "C:\CuteFTP").
  • After you have Cute FTP installed click on the "Start" button then go to "Programs", Cute FTP should be on that list, once you've found it click on it.
  • Now you should have opened Cute FTP, if it tells you about trial information just keep clicking through until you are in the program.
  • If it doesn't automatically have you set up a site then find the "Add Site" button and click on it.
  • For "Site Label" put in anything you want as a label for your site.
  • For "Host Address" put in your web site (ex.www.yoursite.com), for most ees customers this will be www.yourusername.eesc.com
  • For "User ID" and "Password", put in your username and your password (this is required to access your site!
  • After doing this click the "OK" button.
  • Now you should see your site on the list, click on it once to highlight it and then click the "Connect" button.
  • After you are connected if it brings up a little message with the option of clicking "OK" go ahead and click it.
  • You should now see your computer files on the left half of the screen and your site files on the right (if you don't have any files on there yet you won't see any).
  • To transfer files from your hard drive to your web space, double click on the file you want to upload to your site and it will automatically send it.
